Kenya’s climate restoration agenda received a boost on Thursday with the State Department for Correctional Services planting over 5,000 trees at the Kitui GK Prison Command.

The exercise, which was led by Correctional Services Principal Secretary Dr. Salome Beacco, was part of the greening Kenya initiative, with the department having already designated every first Thursday of the month as a day for nationwide tree planting across all correctional facilities.

Speaking during the exercise, the PS said the department remains focused on supporting community-driven climate resilience efforts, adding that environmental conservation is a collective responsibility.

“The State Department for Correctional Services remains committed to playing a practical and meaningful role in this endeavour. Through the mobilization of our clients and staff, we continue to actively participate in tree planting, land rehabilitation, and agroforestry initiatives”. She assured.

She said the efforts are geared toward enhancing climate resilience and improving livelihoods in a region that faces significant environmental challenges.

Pupils from Kitui prison pre-school and central primary school also joined officers from the state department in the tree planting exercise.

The PS had earlier visited the Kitui probation station before touring the Kitui GK men and women prisons, where she addressed both inmates and prison officers.

She was accompanied by Acting Probation and Aftercare Service Secretary Shadrack Kavutai, director enterprise Charles Mutembei, director farms Patrick Kariri and other senior officers from the department.
