Officers drawn from the State Department for Correctional Services on Thursday engaged in a tree planting exercise that saw over seven thousand trees planted at the Naivasha GK Medium Prison.

The exercise, that was presided over by Correctional Services Principal Secretary Dr. Salome Beacco, was part of the department’s monthly tree-planting campaign, where every first Thursday of month is dedicated to tree planting and growing.

Speaking during the event, the PS said the exercise is meant to support the national goal of planting 15 billion trees by 2032 as championed by President William Ruto with the department having already planted over 10 million trees towards the ambitious goal.

“The journey towards achieving the 15 billion tree target requires collective effort, consistency, and unwavering commitment. This is achievable as we commit to remain focused, united and determined.” She observed.

While addressing officers drawn from Naivasha GK Maximum Prison, Naivasha Medium and Naivasha women prisons, the PS assured of the government’s commitment to improve the welfare of officers including housing and health saying transition to the Usalama cover for the National Police Service (NPS) and Kenya Prisons Service (KPS), is meant to ease the struggles of those in uniform and their dependents.

The PS also toured the Naivasha Maximum prison where she urged inmates to take advantage of existing opportunities to improve their lives including undertaking formal and vocational training.

“As a government, we remain committed to strengthening these programmes by fostering partnerships, enhancing capacity, and ensuring that every individual within our correctional system is given a fair opportunity to reform and reintegrate.” She said.

The PS was accompanied by Acting Probation and Aftercare Services Secretary Shadrack Kavutai, Director operations at Kenya Prisons Service David Kilundo and other senior officers from the State Department for Correctional Services.
