By Nicholas Kigondu
It was a celebration of spiritual legacy as the State Department for Correctional Services bid farewell to Father J.B. Macharia, the immediate former Director of Chaplaincy at the Kenya Prisons Service who has retired from service.
In the farewell and thanksgiving ceremony, which was presided over by Bishop Right Reverend Peter Kimani of the Catholic Diocese of Embu, Father JB was honored for his dedication and compassion during his service of providing spiritual guidance, fostering community cohesion, and supporting inmates, staff, and their families.
Speaking during the celebrations, Correctional Services Principal Secretary Dr. Salome Beacco described Father JB as a devoted servant who dedicated his time to serving the most vulnerable.
“You spent your time with the least of the least. You chose the cells where people hardly want to come and demonstrated that there is no corner where God cannot be found,” said the PS.
While thanking the retired Director for his services, Commissioner General of Prisons Patrick Aranduh said Father JB strengthened spiritual care for inmates, staff, and their families during his time at the Service.
The farewell service was also attended by Catholic Bishop of the Diocese of Garissa Right Reverend George Muthaka, staff from the State Department, and family members of Father J.B. Macharia.
