An initiative by Principal Secretaries in aid of those affected by the recent floods in Nairobi has raised over 1.5 million shillings.
The donation was delivered to the Kenya Red Cross Society by Correctional Services PS Dr. Salome Beacco, Roads PS Engineer Joseph Mbugua, Social Affairs and Senior Citizens Affairs PS Joseph Motari, and Parliamentary Affairs Principal Secretary Aurelia Rono witnessed the purchase of food and non-food items as part of emergency intervention in support of those affected by the devastating effects of the floods.
Engineer Mbugua said the gesture by the Principal Secretaries was in line with the President’s call to care for each other, especially in times of need.
According to Beacco, the move was meant to ease the suffering of those affected by floods even as she urged them to ensure that their children are in school once the situation normalizes.
She at the same time urged Kenyans to take advantage of opportunities availed by the government including foreign jobs and the affordable housing scheme.
Rono said the donation will go a long way in supporting those camped at the 16 sites where those affected by floods within Nairobi County are sheltering.
The items included 50 bags of rice, 20 bags of beans, 20 bags of green grams, 10 bags of Cowpeas, 50 dozen of body oil, 165 bales of maize flour,100 cartons of bar soap, 50 cartons of sanitary towels, 40 cartons of cooking oil, 40 bales of sugar and 50 bales of tissue paper.
Social Affairs and Senior Citizens Affairs PS Joseph Motari says the government remains committed to supporting the welfare of its people adding that his department will follow up on the victims of floods once they leave the camps to ensure their wellbeing.
The government has put in place measures to cushion those adversely affected by the floods including logistical and financial support even as calls to have those living in riparian corridors and other water courses to evacuate continue.
Over 200 people have lost their lives and a further 223,000 others displaced by the recent floods that have caused widespread destruction across the country.
