NEWLY REFURBISHED LIBRARY LAUNCHED AT MOMBASA REMAND PRISON

A newly renovated library at Mombasa Remand Prison meant to provide educational resources that support inmate rehabilitation and successful reintegration has been launched.
Correctional Services Principal Secretary Dr Salome Beacco launched the library, whose upgrade was funded by the Dawoodi Bohra Community in Mombasa.
Speaking during the launch, the PS said the collaboration between the State Department for Correctional Services and the Dawoodi Bohra Community is a testament to the power of partnerships in advancing national development goals, particularly in education and rehabilitation.
“It signals a commitment that the individuals in our care deserve opportunities for learning, personal growth, and self-betterment. Education, as the cornerstone of rehabilitation, equips individuals with the tools to reshape their lives, rebuild their futures, and re-enter society as empowered and productive citizens.” She noted.
She said the refurbishment of the library and the donation of over 1,000 books, comprising of educational, science, fictional and religious books, reflect the enduring dedication to uplifting society and nurturing progress.
“The library marks a profound step toward healing, empowerment, and purposeful reintegration. May this space inspire courage, curiosity, and the belief that every person can rebuild his or her story.” She said.
While lauding the transformational agenda as spearheaded by the Principal Secretary, Hamza Taher of the Dawoodi Bohra Community said they remain ready to support the department realize envisaged reforms.
The team also donated 300 pairs of shoes to be used by inmates at the facility with Mombasa Women empowerment chair Amina Abdalla donating a computer.
