State Department for Correctional Services Principal Secretary Dr. Salome M-Beacco has underscored the importance of taking care of the emotional, psychological and social well-being of those working in correctional services.

Speaking after opening a two-day training workshop on wellness targeting senior Correctional Services staff, the PS said the nature of work for those working in correctional facilities meant they required more support to help them keep a healthy balance between their duty demands and social life.

" This training is a resounding testament that we recognize the mental health needs presented by our work and demonstrates our commitment to prioritizing the capacity building of managers to support the mental health of colleagues and clients. The goal of this workshop therefore is to enhance our ability to identify and address the myriad of mental health concerns within the correctional service." She said.

Saying that statistics indicate significant levels of mental health issues among the world population, the PS said there was a need for concerted efforts to address emerging challenges.

This even as she challenged those undergoing the training to be champions of mental health wellness for those under their care.

“Let's learn as much as possible so that we can internalize the lessons and then go out and teach others,” she advised.

Over 40 officers have benefitted from the training organised by the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL) with another group of officers having received training from the organisation earlier this year.
