CORRECTIONAL SERVICES PS HOLDS MEETING WITH SRC OVER IMPLEMENTATION OF PHASE 2 SALARY REVIEW

By Nicholas Kigondu
Kenya Prisons Service officers are set to enjoy phase two of salary review following concurrence from the National Treasury.
In a meeting held at SRC offices, between Correctional Services Principal Secretary Dr. Salome Beacco and a team from the Salaries and Renumeration Commission led by its chairperson Sammy Chepkwony, SRC committed to have the pending implementation of the second phase addressed.
“KPS officers have the burden of ensuring the safety of all kind of offenders which in itself is an onerous task. It is a difficult situation and SRC should make consideration and resolve the matter.” Observed the PS.
SRC Chairperson Sammy Chepkwony said the commission will prioritize addressing the pending implementation of the second phase of the salaries, including July and August arrears.
Speaking during the meeting, Commissioner General of Prisons Patrick Aranduh said it was desirable for KPS officers to benefit from the 10 percent pay increase, as set out in the implementation matrix, to ensure balance across the three services within the security sector.
Phase one of the salary review was implemented in FY 2024/25 following recommendations of the National Taskforce on the Improvement of terms and conditions of service and other reforms for members of the National Police Service, Kenya Prisons Service and the National Youth Service. The Taskforce recommended 40 per cent pay increase for the officers.
In the first phase, an increase of 20 per cent was implemented effective July 1, 2024 for constables, with the percentage gradually decreasing for higher ranks. The subsequent salary reviews were to be embedded within the normal renumeration review cycle by the Salaries and Renumeration Commission (SRC).
