CORRECTIONAL SERVICES PS CLOSES WOMEN, PEACE AND SECURITY CONFERENCE

State Department for Correctional Services Principal Secretary Dr Salome M-Beacco has underscored the significance of women economic empowerment and access to control over resources in growth and development.
Speaking as she officially closed the Regional High- Level conference for the 24th Anniversary of the United Nations Security Council resolutions (UNSC) 1325 on Women, Peace and Security, the PS said the contribution of women in development is diverse and far-reaching.
The PS said the Kenyan government is leveraging on promoting gender equality and ensuring women are empowered especially through leadership positions.
"As a government, we are really committed to issues of gender equality and bringing more women into the decision-making table," she said.
She emphasised on the importance of empowering women for the benefit of the whole community.
"We can really leverage on the soft power that has been bestowed on us to bring about change," she observed.
She added that despite the challenges that women still face including living in conflict zones and marginalized areas, such forums will help in shaping the narrative.
"The ideas and strategies we have developed here, from grassroots activism to regional policies, offer tangible ways to advance the Women, Peace, and Security agenda. We have explored mechanisms for strengthening women's participation in peace processes, ensuring their protection in times of conflict, and amplifying their leadership roles in post-conflict reconstruction, " the PS added.
The 2-day conference, themed 'Fostering Peace and Inclusivity in Eastern and Southern Africa: Effective Strategies for Advancing the Women, Peace and Security Agenda', had drawn membership from 13 countries.
Among topic of discussion at the forum included participation of women in leadership on peace and Security, women voices shaping the global security dialogues, prioritizing women participation in decision making platforms, promote intersectionality of gender, peace and Security.
